While we usually recommend that most customers choose a hardware based Smart Home Hub we recognise that software based solutions are an important part of Home Automation system options.
Home Assistant
Perhaps one of the best known Open Source Smart Home solutions is Home Assistant and we've been working hard over the last few months to add support for the Vesternet Z-Wave and Zigbee devices.
Vesternet Zigbee devices are supported within Home Assistant via the Zigbee2MQTT integration. The "Herdsman Converters" for the Vesternet Zigbee devices are officially available now directly within the Zigbee2MQTT codebase.
Vesternet Z-Wave devices are supported within Home Assistant via the Z-Wave JS integration. The "configuration files" for the Vesternet Z-Wave devices are are officially available now directly within the Z-Wave JS codebase.
Getting Started
While other integration options exist for Z-Wave and Zigbee devices within Home Assistant, we believe that Zigbee2MQTT and Z-Wave JS offer the best user experience.
Once the Vesternet devices have been officially integrated into both projects, they will work out-of-the-box in Home Assistant - simply pair your Vesternet Zigbee device or Include your Vesternet Z-Wave device.
Until that time though, follow the instructions in our guide to manually add the files required to support the Vesternet devices.
Using Zigbee2MQTT and Z-Wave JS also means that the Vesternet devices should work in other Smart Home software that leverages them such as Domoticz and Node-Red!
