Would this work locally "out of the box" without connecting to a central z-wave controller? I understand remote commands require a controller but would a hardwired momentary switch be able to turn on the load immediately after wiring as well?

Hi,
By default it will work with Toggle Switches and you need a Z-Wave controller to change this to Momentary
