To my mind, it depends...
My own view is that home automation supports primary systems, as opposed to replacing them - at least at the moment. I have many of these sensors and they all connect to SmartThings through the cloud (all custom device handlers and handled in the cloud) and I see this as less robust than dedicated heating controls. In my own system, i use presence detection and weather forecast to supplement the rules already in place in my Evohome system (change to economy when nobody is home etc.) In this way, it is all fully under control, and it isn't the end of the world if it doesn't switch to save a few pence.
But... if you are using the Fibaro home center 2 or similar (avoiding the cloud), then you could likely set up the system as you suggest - it isn't hugely different to a wireless thermostat solution - and the sensors can be calibrated etc.
