There can be no absolutes but mine are fitted into metal back boxes with metal faceplates and they work no problem.

Good Question, Difficult answer -
It partly depends on where you can situate the antenna wire in the box, but depends mostly on where the nearest Z-Wave repeater might be. For example, if the brass plate is directly between the antenna and a z-wave controller a long way away, it may not work reliably. Alternatively, if you have another z-wave repeater (another switch or plug) mounted to the side of the brass plate somewhere on the same wall, it may be able to pickup a perfect signal from the antenna and retransmit to the controller.
It all depends on the physical arrangement of the devices in your house.
You could also manually optimize the z-wave mesh network to help the devices find the best routes.

All the Fibaro modules have a wire antenna. The back box to your brass plate is also probably metal. My faceplate is plastic but for good measure I made sure the antenna of the module poked through a hole in the back box. Do this and you should not have a problem. Similarly if you have other zwave devices close by then this will reduce the chance of a problem.

I have mine installed behind brass light switches will no issues at all but obviously will depend on distance from other devices/controller
